After a very successful temporary term that has pleased both the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board and the team’s supporters, Sanath Jayasuriya is about to extend his contract as head coach of the men’s cricket team in Sri Lanka. Since assuming the position in early July, Jayasuriya has guided the squad to several significant successes, including as a memorable One-Day International (ODI) series win against India, a triumphant Test match at The Oval, and another triumphant Test match in Galle against New Zealand.

Initially, SLC was seeking a permanent replacement for Chris Silverwood, who stepped down as head coach in late June. However, due to the significant improvements seen under Jayasuriya’s leadership, the board is now leaning toward securing his services for a longer period. According to Ashley de Silva, SLC’s CEO, the negotiations are in their final stages. “We’re nearing the conclusion of contract negotiations with him. You’ll likely hear an update in the next two or three days,” de Silva told ESPNcricinfo.

Jayasuriya was originally brought in as a cricket consultant in December of last year, where his primary focus was working with the High-Performance Centre. His responsibilities expanded when he accompanied the national team to the T20 World Cup and later assumed the interim head coach position. Despite a few setbacks, including a T20 International (T20I) series loss to India and two Test defeats in England, his overall record has been positive.

Sri Lanka is now competing for a berth in the World Test Championship final under his direction, which is evidence of the advancements made under his direction. His coaching approach has been well received by the team’s players; veteran Angelo Mathews called Jayasuriya’s impact a “turning point” for the group. “Sanath Jayasuriya was superb as cricket director and now as a coach,” Mathews stated. “He possesses exceptional.” He has excellent communication skills and allows us a great deal of freedom. The entire team is aligned and working toward the same goal. He’s been outstanding in developing the players.”

Jayasuriya has had a mixed record in his prior roles. He was the chief selector for the national team for two terms. But since his appointment as head coach, Sri Lankan cricket has benefited much from stability and advancement, and his ongoing guidance will be crucial to the team’s future success.
