TIFF 2024 has announced the winners for the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. The 11-day-long festival concluded with 10 awards including its jury awards and People’s Choice Awards.

This edition of the festival ended with the presenting of the 47th People’s Choice Awards. The segment focuses on awarding the films as selected by the audience through voting. The segment presented three awards including the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award, won by ‘The Substance’ (directed by Coralie Fargeat), the People’s Choice Documentary Award, won by ‘The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal’ (directed by Mike Downie) and the People’s Choice Award, won by ‘The Life of Chuck’ (directed by Mike Flanagan).

The ceremony also presented the Short Cuts Awards judged by the jury of Luis De Filipps, Micah Kernan and Shane Smith. The two awards in the segment were the Short Cuts Award for the Best International Film, won by ‘Deck 5B’ (directed by Malin Ingrid Johansson) and the Short Cuts Award for the Best Canadian Film, won by ‘Are You Scared To Be Yourself Because You Think That You Might Fail?’ (directed by Bec Pecaut). The segment furthermore offered an honorable mention to ‘Quota’ (directed by Job Roggeveen) in the Best International Film category.

The Prize of International Critics, awarded by the FIPRESCI jury, was presented to ‘Mother Mother’ (directed by K’naan Warsame). The award is presented to appreciate and honor the spirit of emerging filmmakers. The NETPAC Award that particularly emphasizes films from the Asian and Pacific regions was presented by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Pacific Cinema to ‘The Last of the Sea Women’ (directed by Sue Kim).

Specific to the country of Canada, the Canadian Discovery Award was presented to ‘Universal Language’ (directed by Matthew Rankin). Moreover, the segment gave an honorable mention to ‘You Are Not Alone’ (directed by Marie-Hélène Viens and Philippe Lupien). As the fest appreciated more Canadian films, the Best Canadian Feature Film Award, presented by Canada Goose, was given to the film ‘Shepherds’ (directed by Sophie Deraspe). The Platform Award was won by ‘They Will Be Dust’ (directed by Carlos Marques-Marcet) along with an honorable mention to Sylvia Chang in ‘Daughter’s Daughter’ (directed by Huang Xi).
