Veteran Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan has come under fire on social media after a video of him kissing female fans during a live concert went viral. The video, which surfaced on various platforms, showed Narayan performing the iconic song Tip Tip Barsa Paani. In the clip, the singer is seen posing for photos with fans before kissing them on the lips, sparking widespread outrage.
The incident quickly gained traction, with many social media users expressing their discomfort and disapproval. However, Udit Narayan defended his actions in an interview, stating that fans often show their love in unexpected ways. “Fans itne deewane hote hain na. Hum log aise nahi hain, hum decent log hain,” Narayan explained, adding that such gestures from fans were a sign of admiration and not something to be sensationalized. He also pointed out the presence of bodyguards at the event, highlighting that fans sometimes engage in extreme displays of affection, like handshakes or even kisses, which he described as a form of “fan craziness.”
Narayan further emphasized that he had been in the industry for over 46 years and had always maintained a respectable image. “I fold my hands when I see the love my fans shower on me. I bow down, thinking this might be the last time I experience such love,” he said, dismissing any allegations of forceful behavior. Despite his explanation, the video continued to stir debate on the internet, with many questioning the appropriateness of such actions, especially considering the power dynamics involved.
Adding to the controversy, older footage of the singer interacting with female celebrities, including popular singers Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal, resurfaced. In one clip, Narayan is seen kissing Yagnik on the cheek during an episode of Indian Idol, which visibly shocked her.
In another instance, Yagnik appears uncomfortable when Narayan kisses her at a different event.
Support for Narayan came from his contemporary, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who recalled his own experiences with overzealous fans. “As superstars, incidents like these keep happening to us singers all the time,” Bhattacharya shared. He also highlighted the lack of proper security at such events, mentioning that fans often cross boundaries, sometimes even tearing their clothes in an attempt to get closer to them.
As the debate continues, many are left questioning where the line should be drawn between fan affection and personal boundaries.
