Maha Kumbh is a Hindu festival that takes place at Prayagraj every 12 years. It is an occasion during which Sadhus across India come together to worship, discuss and meditate. Apart from the holy men, millions of devotees also attend the festival. It is estimated that over 45 crore people will take part in Maha Kumbh Mela 2025.

The festival started on 13 January 2025 and will conclude on 26 February 2025 (Maha Shivaratri). Maha Kumbh began with ‘Paush Poornima Snan’, a dip in the holy river. This year’s Mela is even more exciting for the devotees as a rare celestial alignment that happens only once in 144 years takes place this year.

Uttar Pradesh Police is on high alert and has set up multiple equipment and technologies to ensure safety. They have set up several AI cameras, which are under the surveillance of around 40,000 police and cyber cell officers. Underwater drones will be used to monitor. Apart from the 10 drones, police will patrol around the area frequently.

Over 1000 police officers have been appointed on the border of the district of Prayagraj and also on the roads that connect Prayagraj to other districts. Prashant Kumar, Director General of Police stated that the Uttar Pradesh Police wants to ensure everyone’s safety. Additional security including over 70 inspectors, 234 sub-inspectors, and around 465 constables have been appointed. The Prantiya Rakshak Dal jawans will also actively work to ensure safety during the Maha Kumbh Mela.

This spiritual festival also draws the attention of foreigners. WIRE reporter, on 3 January 2025 met Mr. Alex from USA, who wishes to take part in Maha Kumbh. He said, “I have traveled from forests in Kerala to Pune with Swami ji, my friend. He asked me to visit Maha Kumbh Mela with him, and after I heard all about the festival, I wanted to go. We will be boarding our flight on 13 January. Hinduism is complex. Now, I get to experience and learn more about it.”

Shahi Snans is yet another ritual of Maha Kumbh. From Makar Sankranti Snan on 15 January to Maha Shivaratri Snan on 26 February, the devotees will be taking a dip at the Sangam, which is the place where the holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati merge. After the 45-day-long festival, the Sadhus will leave for their respective places in the hope of meeting again on the next Maha Kumbh.
