The newly inaugurated parliament building in Delhi faces significant water leakage and water logging situations amid heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening. The new parliament building was officially opened in May 2023 at the cost of Rs 971 crore. The opposition Congress party set up a committee to look into the structural integrity of the building while the public voiced criticism against the government.
On Wednesday evening, Delhi and its neighbouring National Capital Region (NCR) faced heavy rains, leading to widespread waterlogging situations and traffic issues. The weather also resulted in the tragic death of three students in a basement flooding in a coaching centre, in the city.
The opposition is slamming the government over the leakage of the newly constructed Rs 971 crore parliament building. After an alleged video was posted by Congress MP Manickam on social media, the opposition raised concerns about the sturdiness and strength of the newly built building.
The alleged video showcased rainwater leakage inside a hall in the building and waterlogging situations near the exit. Congress MP, Manickam Tagore posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, showcasing workers inside the building collecting the water in a bucket amid the water leakage from the roof of the Parliament building.
Later, Congress MP moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the concern, highlighting urgent weather resilience issues in the newly constructed parliament building. Manickam posted the video of the water leak with a reference to the NEET-UG medical entrance paper leak controversy. He further said that there was a paper leakage outside and a water leakage inside.
The other MPs also jabbed the ruling party over parliament roof leakage calling it a ‘Water dripping program.’ Akhilesh Yadav, President of the Samajwadi Party compared the old parliament with the new parliament calling the old one better as the other old MPs could come and meet. He further suggested returning to the old parliament building until the issues of water leakage in the new building which was constructed with billions of rupees, is over.
