Spain’s 16-years-old football phenomenon, Lamine Yamal, who has left spectators astounded throughout the Euro 2024 faces an unparalleled obstacle in the forthcoming final against England. Due to German labour laws, there exists a possibility that Yamal may be prohibited from participating should the match go into extra time or penalties. This regulation could bear considerable consequences for Spain as they aim to clinch their fourth Euro Cup title.

In Germany, labour laws concerning minors working late hours are notably rigid. Specifically, individuals under 18 are exempted from working past 8 p.m., though athletes have a special exemption allowing them to play until 11 p.m. This rule covers the match duration and any post-match activities (showering, media interviews, etc.). The Spanish Football Association (RFEF) could face a fine of 30,000 euros if Yamal continues to play beyond the time limit.

The Euro 2024 final is set to start at exactly 9 p.m. and under standard conditions, the game is supposed to conclude around 10:45 p.m., factoring 15-minute halftime break and injury time added. However, if the match extends into extra time or penalties, it would surpass the 11 p.m. threshold. Resulting, Yamal must be substituted before the extra time begins to comply with the law.

Throughout the tournament, Yamal has been a breakout star. He scored a spectacular goal against France in the semi-finals making him the youngest player to score in Euro Cup history at 16 years. He has been a key player for Spain, contributing assists and crucial plays in multiple matches.

During the group stages, Yamal was substituted in earlier matches to avoid breaking the labour laws. Against Croatia, he was taken off in the 86th minute, 71st minute against Italy, and 19th minute against Albania. Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s manager, is planning carefully around Yamal’s availability. Substituting him before the extra time is crucial in case the match goes beyond its regular time. The team has to ensure that Yamal plays an effective role within the legal constraints.

The final against England is highly anticipated, with Spain aiming to secure their fourth Euro Cup win. On the other hand, England seeks their first Euro title having reached the final only once before in 2020. Yamal’s potential absences during extra time or penalties could provide a huge advantage for England.
