In the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, residences have crumbled as a result of landslides stemming from intense rainfall. A high-level alert has been declared, signaling the anticipation of sustained heavy downpours. This prolonged rain spell has triggered landslides, cloudbursts, and rapid floods, leading to extensive harm in the ecologically sensitive mountainous expanse. Fortunately, due to timely evacuations, no human casualties have been recorded. The area has also encountered road closures due to fallen trees.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has heightened its concerns by releasing a red alert, indicating the potential for substantial to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. Moreover, an orange alert has been issued, forecasting significant precipitation ranging from 115.6mm to 204.4mm on the 24th of August.
In acknowledgment of the gravity of the situation, the Himachal Pradesh administration has designated the entire state as an ‘area impacted by natural calamity.’ Official data highlights the economic toll of the relentless rains, estimated at ₹10,000 crore.
This encompasses the devastation of 2,022 residences and partial damage to 9,615 homes. Throughout this monsoon season, 113 landslides have been registered. Tragically, the region has mourned 224 lives lost due to the intensity of the monsoon, with a further 117 individuals succumbing to road accidents, as reported in the official government bulletin.
