Indian opening batsman, Shubman Gill, reached a remarkable landmark in his career and clinched the title of No.1 One-Day International batsman in the world by surpassing Pakistan batsman Babar Azam.
Gill found his amazing form in the recent ODI series against England. India white washed the English men with 3-0. His individual scores were 87,60 & 112. He was the top-run scorer in the series. He scored a massive 259 runs with an average of 86.33, along with a strike rate of 103.60. On the other hand, the Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer was 78 runs behind Gill. He scored 181 runs for the first time during the 2023 ODI World-Cup. Gill’s batting technique and his adaptability through all three formats makes him an amazing player. This is the second time he rose up the top spot suppressing Babar Azam to the second place. His extreme talent to play for the team under all circumstances made him the top batsman in One-Day Internationals.
While sharing his thoughts upon reaching the top position in ODI’s, Gill expressed his happiness with the term ‘Numero Uno’. Upon scoring a winning century in the match, he spoke about the way to structure the innings. He stated that, ‘The message was sent from outside that I have to try to bat till the end and that’s what I tried to do.’ Gill’s ability to support the team under pressure has made his spot prominent in the team.
Shubman Gill was born on 9 September in the year 1999 in Punjab. His love towards the sport began from a young age. Gill’s father, Lakhwinder Singh found him to be passionate about the sport. His extreme talent and potential was rewarded when he was given the opportunity to represent Punjab A in the 2016-2017 Vijay Hazare Trophy. His rise in international cricket is fascinating. He made his debut into ODI’s in the year 2019, January against New Zealand.
