The Indian film industry rejoiced on Sunday as Homebound, featuring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, was officially selected as India’s contender for the 2026 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
An Anirudh Sen film- it has drawn praise for its emotional storytelling, layered performances, and its nuanced exploration of themes such as migration and identity. Having already won recognition on the global festival circuit, Homebound is now set to carry India’s voice to the most prestigious stage in world cinema.
Sharing his excitement, Ishaan Khatter remarked, “Some films are bigger than us and Homebound is one of them. To see it resonate and be chosen for the Oscars is overwhelming. This is for everyone who believes in the story.”
Resonating with the statement, co star Janhvi Kapoor reclaimed the sentiment, adding
“As actors we hope a film can move people, but this kind of recognition feels surreal. Homebound has been a journey of love and discovery, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Vishal Jethwa, who has been lauded by critics for his performance, described the selection, “a dream come true.”
He said, “We poured our hearts into this film and to see it reach, the stage has been humbling. It feels like all our efforts have been validated.”
The film has been commended by The Film Federation of India’s jury for its “emotional depth and universal appeal”, and said that it stood out among a strong line of contenders.
Director Anirudh Sen further highlighted the significance of the film and said, “This is not just our film going to the Oscars, it is Indian cinema continuing to find its place in global conversation. Homebound carries with it stories of millions.”
It is anticipated that Homebound will not just showcase Indian storytelling to a world audience, but also highlight the country’s evolving cinematic voice.
