In the first major milestone in the history of Indian and Punjabi cinema, actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh has received his first international Emmy awards nomination in the category of Best Performance by an Actor. This prestigious award celebrates his intensely touching role as a legendary Punjabi folk artist Amar Singh Chamkila in the Netflix film Amar Singh Chamkila directed by Imtiaz Ali. The nominations officially appeared in the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on September 25, 2025. To add to personal accomplishment of Dosanjh, the movie was nominated in the category of TV Movie / Mini-Series, which symbolized a two-fold win of the entire production.

The new International Emmy Awards 53 will be organized on November 24 in the colorful environment of New York City. Dosanjh competes against a trio of great international actors, including David Mitchell in Ludwig (UK), Orial Pla in Yo, adicto (Spain) and Diego Vasquez in One Hundred Years of Solitude (Colombia). Diljit, reacting to the news, graciously admitted what the project was being run by, the director Imtiaz Ali, by composing a simple yet deep message: It is all because of Imtiaz Ali sir. In its turn, Ali made a warm praise to his lead actor: Making us proud @diljitdosanjh!!! So well deserved.” This scene is especially noteworthy considering the earlier remarks of Ali regarding the casting process of the film wherein he remembered how Dosanjh was not a big star yet and was not an international festival like Coachella, and therefore this Emmy nomination is a significant milestone to their artistic relationship.

Released on Netflix in April 2024, Amar Singh Chamkilais a lively adaptation of the story of the man who is widely referred to as the Elvis of Punjab. Hyped as a brash lyricist and a charismatic performer, Chamkila had soared to prominence in the 1980s before being shot dead with his wife, Amarjot (who is played by Parineeti Chopra) at the age of 27. The musical environment of the film, which was performed by A.R. Rahman, was a very important dimension of emotional background. The movie has already basked in the domestic awards circuit because of its excellence. Chamkila dominated the primary categories at the 2024 Filmfare OTT Awards, where it won Best Film (Web Original), Best Director and Best Actor among others. But the fact that this film has been nominated in the category of International Emmy brings it to an even higher level of global recognition. It also highlights the transformation of Dosanjh as a theatrical performer as well as the increased international recognition of authentic Indian regional narrative.

After the ground-breaking nature of other Indian productions, such as Delhi Crime, or even artists, such as comedian Vir Das, in the Emmys, the nomination of Dosanjh solidly places the Punjabi cinema in this growing global discourse. This nomination is not just a personal success of Diljit, but it is a gateway to a wider world career. In the case of the film, it acts as an irrefutable affirmation that tales that are the most embedded in local culture, with all the honesty and skill put into them, have the universal ability to engage and touch all boundaries. In this way Amar Singh Chamkila becomes not the local legend, but an important input to the world cultural discourse.
