With yet another fitting display to extend their impressive run in all competitions, Aston Villa saw off Manchester United 2-1 at Villa Park on Sunday to sit 3rd in the league with 36 points. The Villans came into the game confident after having defeated West Ham in their previous game and league leaders Arsenal earlier this month.
Right at the end of the first half, from the left flank, Rogers cut inside to the penalty area to curl one into the top corner, leaving Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens glued to his feet, who could only ball-watch as the effort made its way into the net. This gave Villa a deserving lead, allowing them to go into the second with momentum on their side.
But to their dismay, the lead was cut short late at stoppage time 45 ‘+3 of the half after Matty Cash was dispossessed by Patrick Dorgu, allowing Matheus Cunha through to slot one from the six-yard box into the bottom corner of the far post to equal the scoreline.
Just when things seemed to get back into place, the Red Devils lost their skipper, Bruno Fernandes, who had to be forced off the pitch at half-time. In the 57th minute, the tides again turned in favor of the Villans as the ball fell to Rogers’ feet in the penalty area for him to curl one into the net, similar to his opener, only not quite as special.
Nothing short of a stellar performance and individual brilliance from Morgan Rogers sealed the game for the club’s 7th consecutive win in the league and 10th in all competitions, putting them right on track to equaling their previous record for the most consecutive wins in a row.
Ruben Amorim’s men were once again left absolutely gutted after failing to bag a win, coming into the game from a thrilling 4-4 draw with Bournemouth last week. They will now face Newcastle in their next game, while Aston Villa will look to equal their record number of wins in a row when they face Chelsea this Saturday.
