The Maharashtra State Election Commission has announced that January 15, 2026 will be a public holiday in areas where municipal corporation elections are scheduled. The decision was made to give voters time to prepare for the upcoming municipal elections taking place across the state on January 15, 2026, and to give citizens the opportunity to vote in 29 large cities and municipal corporations, including (but not limited to) Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik, and Nagpur.
As a result of the state’s official holiday order, several offices and banks located within the places where the elections will be occurring will be closed for business on January 15, including government and semi-government offices, statutory corporations, boards, and public sector entities.
According to election officials, the state government’s decision to make January 15 a public holiday is an effort to enhance voter participation in local elections by providing sufficient time for voters to go to their polling place and vote without having to worry about going to work.
Additionally, election officials have indicated that they are well prepared to facilitate an efficient election process. All necessary preparations have been made for the deployment of election workers and proper setup and training of the EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) to be used on Election Day, as well as the training of all personnel that will conduct the counting of votes on Election Day.
This Election day is a holiday for the 29 Civic Bodies involved in this election. However, it is important for residents outside of the election day area to know that the Exchange’s Stock Exchanges – BSE and NSE – are anticipated to function normally, as there is no announcement by market regulators regarding a trading halt on January 15, 2023.
The campaigning has been completed, and all preparations done, and we hope that Election Day Holiday will ensure that the Civic Elections are well-attended and duly conducted.
