Jasprit Bumrah’s return to the Indian T20I squad was expected to be one of the biggest positives ahead of the Afghanistan series. But alongside his return came another injury setback, with fast bowler Harshit Rana ruled out of the series and the 2026 Asian Games. The developments have once again put the focus on India’s player fitness and injury management.

Bumrah, who had been recovering from a knee injury, received fitness clearance along with Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy. His availability strengthens India’s bowling attack as the team prepares for a busy period that includes the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games.

Rana’s situation, however, has been more concerning. He sustained a new hamstring injury during a physical test at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. It was yet another blow to the talented fast bowler who was not able to play in the 2026 T20 World Cup and IPL due to an injury. Yash Thakur was named as his replacement for both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games.

The timing of the injury also brought attention to the BCCI’s support staff. A team physiotherapist was reportedly removed from his position shortly before the Afghanistan series. However, the BCCI has not publicly given specific reasons for the decision. That makes it important to separate the confirmed facts from speculation about whether the staff change was connected to recent injuries.

India’s injury concerns have continued even after players received fitness clearances.Varun Chakaravarthy, who had made his comeback after recovering from his hamstring injury and rehab in the BCCI’s Center of Excellence, sustained another injury on the side after the first T20I match against Afghanistan. Varun was sidelined from all future T20Is and the participation of the player in Asian Games remains to be seen.

It goes without saying that it is very tough to ensure that the internationals are always physically fit while playing in the congested schedule of cricket matches. It is especially important for fast bowlers to ensure that they take care of their fitness, as their injury can affect both the career and Indian combination.

The comeback of Bumrah is certainly welcome for India, but there are still concerns about the fitness of the players. As India prepares for more international cricket, the effectiveness of its injury-management system will remain under close attention.
