The construction of Baner-Pashan Link Road, which is considered as the key to solving the traffic congestion in Pune city, is likely to resume soon as the civic body has started a land acquisition process, which was pending for the past 12 years.

Rajesh Bankar, in-charge of the roads department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said on Tuesday that a total compensation of approximately Rs 68 crore has been paid out after completing all the paperwork.

The construction of the remaining portion would commence after the completion of land acquisition, he added.

The 1.2 kilometre long road had been sanctioned way back in 1992. Though the construction of the road had commenced in 2014, land acquisition for the 200 metre stretch of the 36 metre wide road was still pending.

The road will be a relief to the 2.5 lakh people living in Baner, Pashan, Sutarwadi and the adjoining areas.

In 2021, the Baner-Pashan Link Road Welfare Trust had approached the Bombay High Court seeking an order for time bound completion of the construction. In August 2023, the court had directed the PMC to acquire the required land and provide the court a timeline for the acquisition and construction of the road. However, the civic body was unable to do so and was held guilty of it.

In 2021, the Baner-Pashan Link Road Welfare Trust filed a petition in the Bombay High Court asking for a directive to finish the construction of the road on a time-bound basis. In August 2023, the court ordered the PMC to acquire the necessary land and prepare the timetable for the same and for the completion of the rest of the work. But the civic body failed to execute the order.

Last year in April, the High Court asked the civic body to acquire the land for the road in two months and complete the construction of the road in four months from then.
