Usman Khawaja was brought back into Australia’s playing XI in dramatic and unexpected circumstances on the morning of the third Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval, stepping straight into the crucial number four position at very short notice.

The recall comes after Khawaja had been left out for three consecutive Tests earlier in the series, following a disappointing run that saw him manage no more than two runs in a single innings. Those performances had sparked widespread debate about his future in Test cricket, with many questioning whether the veteran batter still had a role to play at the highest level.

This sudden opportunity, however, offers Khawaja a chance to revive his Ashes campaign and silence critics by delivering when the team needs him most. The reshuffle forced Australia’s management to rethink their middle order plans just hours before the start of play, adding an extra layer of pressure to an already high-stakes contest.

The late change was necessitated after senior batter Steve Smith was ruled out due to illness on the morning of the match, despite Australia having already announced their playing eleven.

Captain Pat Cummins confirmed Smith’s absence after winning the toss and opting to bat. Smith had been experiencing nausea and dizziness in the lead-up to the Test and was under close observation by Cricket Australia’s medical staff.

Although he remained available until early on match day, the team management ultimately decided not to risk him and sent him home after he failed to fully recover. Cricket Australia later confirmed that Smith was dealing with a vestibular issue, a condition he has managed in the past.

As a precautionary measure, the board opted to prioritise his long-term fitness and stated that Smith is expected to return for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
