Nitin Nabin becomes the youngest national president at 45 as he steps into his role of national working president for the BJP. The Bihar Minister may now walk the path of becoming a national minister, succeeding Union Minister JP Nadda. The elevation of Nabin, a five-time MLA, is being perceived as a smart move by PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to drive the much-needed generational shift at the apex of the party structure.
Nabin belongs to the upper-caste Kayastha community, which holds a very insignificant position in Bihar’s population. His selection brings a shock to all speculations, proving yet again PM Modi’s “out of the box” strategies. It also delivers the message that performance and organisational acumen are the only standards in BJP.
Moreover, the members of the party have much more to say about Nabin than his young age. They quickly pointed out how he has consistently won elections, effectively discharged various organisational duties across the country, and managed his ministerial portfolio, all while maintaining an uncontroversial profile. They also talked highly about his journey in politics since 2006, when he was bestowed with the duty after his father’s unexpected demise.
This promotion of a much younger leader to such a status in the party carries new implications for the government. There are speculations that it comes with a new era with the long-overdue ministerial reshuffle, the first since Modi resumed his office in 2024.
Lastly, as the BJP government makes preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in multiple places, this new appointment clarifies the party’s intent to invest in new, young, and result-orientated leaders. Although a bold decision, this decision was necessary in order to move far from conventional politics. It is a step towards welcoming the new generation of politicians who are more than capable of navigating Indian politics.
