On 15th January 2026, across 29 municipal corporations, including major urban centers like Thane, Nagpur and Sambhaji Nagpur, votes were casted and the counting began on 16th January 2026, amidst the careful observation under political observers and the citizens.

It’s been observed that voter participation has somewhat gone down with an estimated 46-50% turnout statewide, major cities are reported with a similar pattern, whereas Mumbai has recorded about 41% , Pune  37% and Nagpur approximately 41% turnout.

State election officials stated that the subdued turnout somewhat reflects both apathy and procedural challenges, although it was reported that the polling was concluded peacefully.

BMC: the Political Bellwether

The Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation(BMC), India’s wealthiest civic body with 227 seats, is currently the most watched contest at the moment. According to the current count, the BJP-led Mahayuti is making a strong pitch to control the BMC, indicating Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde’s loss of power.

While most of the political leaders were focused on issues like religion, caste, etc but on the other hand urban voters were more concerned more about traffic snarls and crumbling roads,During the time of election the oppositions have raised concerns over the election security and alleged irregularities took place.
