Vince Zampella, the co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise passed away following a car crash in Los Angeles on Sunday. Vince crashed his Ferrari onto a concrete barrier on the Angeles Crest Highway which is situated north of Los Angeles.
Vince was 55 years old and his death was confirmed by Electronic Arts on Monday. A video of the crash has been circulating online. The video shows the Ferrari which had Vinvce in it, speeding and crashing into a concrete barrier on a mountain road. Following the contact, the car broke into pieces and eventually was engulfed in flames.
Video evidence shows that the passersby near the engulfed car quickly rushed to help the people stuck in the car. They managed to pull out a person from the mangled remains of the vehicle, which unfortunately was not enough. The reason for the Ferrari veering off track still remains to be unknown, the California Highway Patrol stated. The California Highway Patrol also added that the driver and the passenger who was ejected from the vehicle had succumbed to their injuries.
Vince Zampella had created some of the most iconic and best selling video games. He was also considered to be a pioneer in the genre of FPS(First Person Shooter) style video games. Zampella had expressed his gratitude to fans when Battlefield 6, the video game, set a new sales record for the franchise. The legacy of the Battlefield franchise has seen over a 100 million players over the last two decades.
Zampella was known for co-creating the Call of Duty franchise. He had also founded Respawn Entertainment. Respawn was the studio behind the massively successful Titanfall, Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi franchise. He started out as a designer on shooter games in the 90’s and co-founded Infinity Ward in the year 2002. This company was the launchpad for Call of Duty before it was acquired by Activision.
The gaming industry is currently mourning the loss of an incredible figure in the gaming world. Electronic Arts put out a statement which stated that his loss was unimaginable and their hearts are with the family of Vince. Respawn Entertainment put out a heartfelt message and praised Vince for his work ethics and the trust he showed his team and encouraging innovative and bold ideas. Vince is survived by his three children and ex-wife.
