The forum for IT employees (FITE) has called on PMRD to consider a phased opening of the 23km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line, rather than waiting for its full completion in March 2026. It’s a key project for the city’s IT workforce, and it is expected to ease Pune’s messy traffic between its tech hub and residential areas.

In a letter addressed to PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase, FITE pressed that the 13 km stretch between Hinjewadi phase 3 and Baner be opened at the earliest, stating substantial construction progress and pressing computer needs. The contract was signed by FITE Maharashtra president Pavanjit Mane and secretary Prashant Pandit.

“We understand from the recent meeting at the chief minister’s office that the government is inclined to inaugurate the entire stretch at one go. While that ensures completeness, the delay will extend the daily hardships of lakhs of IT commuters,” (Quoted by Times of India), the letter stated.

FITE highlighted that the  Baner IT Park, which is located very near to the suggested route, has houses around 1.5 to 2 lakh employees within a close radius. Adjacent to Baner–Balewadi residential belt, which has also witnessed daily heavy traffic as thousands of professionals travel to and from Hinjewadi’s IT phases. Mane has highlighted the fact that the Hinjewadi Phase 3 Baner segment is nearly ready and is currently undergoing testing.

Referencing earlier occurrences like the gradual opening of Pune Metro’s first routes, the Samruddhi Mahamarg, and city flyovers, along with the Sinhagad and University roads, FITE requested a similar strategy. “If those were able to open in phases, why not this one?” (Quoted by Times of India) Mane has questioned.

While accepting that the Prime Minister would want to open the entire roadline ceremonially, FITE has requested that such preparation not slow down the operational readiness. “Early Diwali or Christmas opening would be an earnest step for lakhs of IT professionals who power Pune’s economy and worldwide image,” (Quoted by The Times of India), said Pandit.

PMRDA officials have indicated that they hope to finish trial runs of the complete roadlines by the end of this year and have a formal inauguration by March.
