The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports recently announced that 634 athletes representing 38 distinct sports disciplines will compete in the 2019 Asian Games. This number of athletes, which is less than the 850 previously suggested by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has all satisfied the necessary selection criteria, according to a formal announcement made on Aug. 25.

This marks a notable increase from the 572 athletes who represented India in the 2018 Asian Games. During the event, India secured an impressive 70 medals, including 16 Gold medals.

Track and field events stand out among the approved athletes, with 65 participants—31 women and 34 men—earning a spot in the extensive contingent. The comprehensive list comprises sportspersons from 38 diverse disciplines. Notably, the list encompasses 44 footballers, evenly split between men’s and women’s teams. Hockey also commands a significant presence, with 36 athletes evenly distributed across men’s and women’s teams.

Cricket, the biggest sport in India, will be well represented with men’s and women’s teams, each comprising 15 members. Additionally, the shooting category, in which India has consistently excelled in the continental showcase, will see a major group of 30 participants competing in Hangzhou. Meanwhile, a contingent of 33 athletes will represent India in sailing.

Certain sports like weightlifting, gymnastics, handball, and rugby have not received clearance for male athletes. Also, only two female athletes have received approval to compete in weightlifting and the martial art of Kurash, while only one gymnast has been included.

Between Sept. 23 and Oct. 8, Hangzhou, China, will host the eagerly awaited Asian Games. The upcoming 19th edition of the tournament will commence on Sept. 23, featuring a notable addition of five new sports that will debut: Esports, baseball, softball, karate, and sport climbing. While cricket was included in the 2010 and 2014 editions of the event, it’s noteworthy that this marks India’s inaugural participation with their teams in the Asian Games.
