Controversy has escalated over the fixtures on the India-Pakistan match during the Asia Cup 2025 match at Dubai on grounds of the International Cricket Stadium which was scheduled to be held on September 14th. While some opinionated against India facing Pakistan due to escalation in the terrorism activities, IPL franchise Punjab Kings took a unique stance by completely excluding Pakistan in their match announcement on social media. A plea filed in the Supreme Court in regards to the urgent hearing of the cancellation of the match was also denied by the apex.
The Punjab Kings social media post deliberately avoided naming Pakistan as their opponent team in order to build suspense sparked an intense row and reaction thread so much so that the franchise had to shut their comment section over social media X.
The apex court petition highlighted serious concerns regarding ongoing India-Pakistan cricket relations. The petitioners’ argued that it was wrong to be playing with Pakistan after severe terror attacks on Pahalgam and our soldiers dying during Operation Sindoor. They also claimed that this just sends the “wrong message.”
The petitioners also expressed worry that playing with Pakistan would hurt the sentiments of the terror victims’ families. The emphasis largely was upon how citizens’ security and national dignity should be prioritised over entertainment. The petitioners also claimed that playing such matches would negatively impact the morale of the armed forces and the nation.
India-Pakistan cricket matches, from a long time ago, have been a massive interest, not just as a sporting rivalry but also because of the complex political relationship between the two nations. The upcoming Dubai row has also continued to spark numerous debates about sports and politics in the sub-continent.
