Professional wrestling and Hollywood actor John Cena retires following his final match against Austrian wrestler Gunther on Saturday Night Main Event Pay-per-View on Saturday. Cena retires after nearly 25 years of performing under the WWE.
John Cena, the 17 time world champion in the WWE, retired following his defeat against Gunther. John Cena tapped out to Gunther to a sleeper hold in the final minutes of the match, as well as Cena’s well decorated career. This was Cena’s first defeat via submission in over 2 decades, especially considering the fact that Cena’s motto was “Never Give Up”.
This decision to end the career of possibly the most decorated superstar in the entirety of sports entertainment through a submission tap out had the fans go livid on social media. Many users urge a boycott of the WWE product. This also adds to the pre existing rage over the inflated ticket prices following the takeover of WWE by the TKO group.
Cena has acted in multiple Hollywood films and shows in the past, including productions of WWE itself. Currently starring as Peacemaker in the DC Universe, Cena announced his retirement from the WWE a year back as this year marked his retirement tour. The fans haven’t been the biggest fans of the booking of the most recent Grand Slam champion.
This year saw the biggest shock decision with John Cena turning heel against in the Elimination Chamber PPV. The storyline involved Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Travis Scott along with Cena who would form a faction. This ultimately led to nowhere as both Travis Scott and The Rock had no available dates for WWE due to their conflicting schedules with concert tours and filming dates respectively.
Cena’s final opponent was selected via a tournament which saw the return of well loved WWE Superstars such as Zack Ryder and Dolph Ziggler which got a positive response from the crowd. The final of this tournament was controversial as well. LA Knight had lost to Gunther, who already had the privilege to retire Goldberg from professional wrestling this year. The fans are currently reacting extremely poorly towards Triple H and the WWE product as a whole.
