According to reports, the Union government has nominated Neelkanth Mishra as the temporary head of UIDAI, the nodal organization providing UID numbers. He is the Head of Global Research at Axis Capital and the Chief Economist at Axis Bank.

The three appointments are for a three-year term or until age 65, whichever comes first.

Mishra joined Axis Bank in May 2023 as Chief Economist and Head of Global Research after more than 20 years at Credit Suisse, where he served as India Head of Research, India Equity Strategy, and Co-Head of APAC Strategy. Mishra has been designated as the part-time chairperson.

According to the information on LinkedIn, he received his degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. According to a Moneycontrol report, he has served as an advisor to numerous government committees and was a member of the 15th Finance Commission’s Economic Advisory Council.

Additionally, he has been a steadfast supporter of the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) programmes, according to the study.

In accordance with the provisions of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits, and Services) Act, 2016 (Aadhaar Act 2016), the Government of India established the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on July 12, 2016, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

The Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Act 2019 (14 of 2019) revised the Aadhaar Act 2016 and went into force on July 25, 2019.

All Indian citizens now possess “Aadhaar” UIDs thanks to the creation of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). A Chairperson, two part-time Members, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who also serves as the Authority’s member secretary, make up the authority.
