On the occasion of the 77th Independence Day, the Center announced that 954 police officers from various central and state unhadhave received service medals. The President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG), Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM), and Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) have all been given to members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
28 members of the CRPF, 33 members of Maharashtra, 55 members of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, 24 members of Chhattisgarh, 22 members of Telangana, and 18 members of Andhra Pradesh have made it to the list of those receiving gallantry awards. The remaining members come from other states, Union Territories (UTs), and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
The President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) and Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) are given out for conspicuous bravery that results in the preservation of life and property, the reduction of crime, or the capture of offenders. The Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) is given for significant service that demonstrates resourcefulness and devotion to duty, while President’s Police Medal (PPM) is given for very noteworthy accomplishments among the police force.
The President’s Police Medal, a prestigious accolade established in 1951, continues to stand as a symbol of valour and dedication within India’s law enforcement community. Honouring exemplary service and acts of bravery, this distinguished award is conferred on Republic Day and Independence Day, celebrating the selfless contributions of police personnel across the nation.
During the Republic Day celebrations in 2023, a total of 901 police personnel were awarded Police Medals. Among these, 140 individuals were honoured with the Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), while 93 received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM). Furthermore, a significant group of 668 officers was recognized with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM), highlighting their exceptional dedication and contributions.
