OpenAI establishes New Delhi office as it expands in India.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced on Thursday, August 22, 2025, that it will open its first office in New Delhi as part of its expansion into the Indian market. The company has also set up a new entity, OpenAI India Private Limited, and begun hiring local staff.

The company stated that,”The new office in India is a sign of what the company believes in supporting the government in IndiaAI Mission and achieving the purpose of building AI in India, with India.” The precise location of the office in New Delhi will be updated soon.

After the U.S., India ranks as the second-largest market and is among the top five developer markets globally. Open AI has claimed that it will be useful to serve students, educators, professionals and developers in India, better.

OpenAI has also launched a new low-cost plan called ChatGPT Go priced in rupees for Indian users to access advanced AI models and have easy access. The company noted that it had made significant recent changes on Indic language performance which is in line with the government action towards improved Indic language AI applications. 

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated that “India had all the right ingredients to be a global leader when it comes to AI as it had amazing tech talent, a world-class developer community and government backing behind it. Having an office and developing a local team is a first step towards opening our first office.”

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed this development to reflect the increasing interest of India with regards to digital innovation and the adoption of AI. He added that “OpenAI partnership will help the country sustain the vision of trusted and inclusive AI.”
