KYIV, Ukraine, Russian forces unleashed another round of missile and drone attacks on various Ukrainian cities overnight on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials claimed, just before high-ranking Ukrainian and American ambassadors would have their inaugural face-to-face meeting to negotiate a diplomatic way out of the war.
According to Ukrainian officials, dozens of missiles and hundreds of Shahed Iranian-designed drones were launched at night, as a result of which infrastructure, railroad systems and residential areas in southern and central Ukraine were hit. Emergency services testified to injuries in several places and to the destruction of transportation facilities and administrative buildings.
One of the most notable events took place in southern Ukraine, where the railway infrastructure and a passenger train without people were attacked by a drone strike, which injured at least five railway workers and civilians, as Ukrainian transport officials claimed. According to local authorities, the attack damaged local railway facilities and disrupted operations in the short run.
The attacks coincided with the U.S and Ukrainian authorities making diplomatic consultation preparations in coordinating security aid and discussing possible structures of negotiation with Moscow. The discussions, which are likely to be held in Europe this week, form a larger initiative by Western governments to rekindle stagnant diplomatic initiatives as the war enters its 5th year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the attacks, saying the barrage reflected that Russia was still dependent on air warfare against civilian infrastructures. Officials said that Ukrainian air defence forces shot down a great number of incoming drones and missiles, but some did make it through the defences and hit cities.
Military observers believe the timing of the attack could have been an old strategy of war: Raising military pressure before negotiations. During the conflict, the key Russian missile and drone campaigns have often been accompanied by diplomatic news or international summits between Ukraine and its allies.
According to the national railway operator in Ukraine, the Russian army has been targeting transportation infrastructure in the past months with greater creativity. The railway network is a vital lifeline to the nation, particularly for the evacuation of civilians, transporting the military and humanitarian supply routes.
In the meantime, Ukraine has intensified the development of countering the increasingly dangerous drone warfare. Governments have started installing defence systems like anti-drone nets as well as hardened coverings on strategic installations and frontline supply lines.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine started in full in February 2022 and resulted in the largest military conflict in post-World War II Europe. The war displaced millions of people, ruined cities in eastern and southern Ukraine and transformed world geopolitics.
Although the Western allies and Kyiv revitalised their diplomatic relations, the likelihood of a whole settlement is unclear. As massive strikes persist despite the ongoing negotiating efforts, the recent assaults serve to highlight how out of step the continued negotiation and war reality are.
