Calcutta-based fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is the Indian representative for Disney’s new global campaign, Create 100, in collaboration with the Make-A-Wish foundation. The campaign celebrates the art of storytelling on Disney’s 100th anniversary and involves artists around the world contributing their pieces inspired by Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century characters as a show of support and solidarity with the charitable organisation.
The Create 100 project includes A-listers like Beyonce, Christian Louboutin, Tommy Hilfiger, Lang Lang, Giovanna Engelbert, and Vik Muniz, and this fresh association with Make-A-Wish has been marked by a million-dollar donation to the non-profit organisation. Big brands such as Coach, Swarovski, Adidas, and Pandora are on the roster. To kickstart the campaign, a 6-feet installation of Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey from Disney’s ‘Fantasia’, made in collaboration with Virgil Abloh Securities will be unveiled at the Royal College of Art in London. The sculpture designed by ALASKA ALASKA was commissioned by Disney and draws inspiration from Abloh’s grid furniture series as well as Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday illustrations.
“I grew up with the beloved character Mickey Mouse. There weren’t endless streams of entertainment back then, but Disney was always around. I think the fantastical worlds created by Disney shaped my imagination and made me the designer I am today,” Sabyasachi told Lifestyle Asia. “It’s my absolute honor and privilege to represent India and be a part of Create 100. It feels like a perfect homecoming,” he added.
The designer took to Instagram to share the announcement, adding that he will contribute a ‘special creation’ in honor of Disney’s 100th anniversary. The Sabyasachi x Disney Create 100 collection will drop in September.
