Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong arrived in India on Tuesday for a three-day official visit, his first since assuming office. The visit carries symbolic weight as both countries celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations this year.

Wong’s visit to New Delhi comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Over the next two days, the two leaders are expected to hold wide-ranging discussions on trade, regional security, digital cooperation, and global issues where India and Singapore share interests. Officials on both sides have said the aim is to give fresh energy to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was elevated during Modi’s Singapore visit in 2024.

The Singapore delegation is a large one, including ministers for foreign affairs, finance, transport, trade, and digital development. Wong is also scheduled to meet several top Indian officials, including President Droupadi Murmu, S. Jaishankar the External Affairs Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman the Finance Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan the Education Minister, J.P. Nadda the Health Minister, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

Apart from political meetings, Wong will pay respects at Rajghat and host a reception for Singaporeans living in India. He is also expected to engage with Indian business leaders at a roundtable to discuss new investment opportunities. The visit builds on momentum from the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in Delhi last month.

Both governments have signaled that several agreements are likely to be signed. According to officials, these include cooperation in aviation, shipping, and space technology. The leaders are also expected to virtually inaugurate a major container terminal in Maharashtra developed with investment from the Port of Singapore Authority.

With these steps, the two nations are looking not just to reaffirm old ties but to push them into new areas, particularly digital innovation, infrastructure, and economic growth.
