Sourav Ganguly, beloved dada has once again taken the top spot at the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). The former India captain and ex-BCCI chief was re-elected unopposed as president, returning to the role he held from 2015 to 2019.
For many in Kolkata and across Bengal, the news felt like a homecoming. Ganguly, lovingly known as “Dada”, has always been more than just a cricketer here. From waving his shirt at Lord’s to guiding Indian cricket through a bold new era, his leadership has carried a certain fearlessness. Now with the CAB presidency back in his hands, expectations are naturally high.
At Eden Gardens, officials and members welcomed his return with smiles and handshakes. It was less of a contest and more of a coronation; nobody else filed nomination papers. That in itself reflects the strong faith the state’s cricket fraternity still has in him.
What lies ahead? Insiders say Ganguly is keen to sharpen the focus on infrastructure and talent development. He has often spoken about creating more opportunities for young cricketers in districts outside Kolkata. With Bengal’s Ranji Trophy record showing promise but also inconsistency in recent years, his immediate challenge may be to build depth in the squad and strengthen grassroots cricket.
Beyond the technical plans, though, it’s also about the spirit. Bengal cricket has a unique culture, passionate crowds at Eden, countless youngsters chasing a cricketing dream and an old legacy waiting for fresh glory. With Ganguly steering the ship again, fans are already whispering about “a new dawn” for Bengal cricket.
For now, the mood is hopeful. A familiar face is back in charge and his trademark confidence could be just what Bengal cricket needs.
