On September 12, 2025, a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft flying from Kandla to Mumbai airport experienced a technical issue right after its takeoff. One of its outer wheels came off during the liftoff.
Air traffic controllers noticed something falling from the aircraft moments after the aircraft lifted off. They immediately alerted the cockpit. Vehicles were sent to inspect the Runway fire Firefighters along with rescue units were deployed near the runway as a safety measure.
The aircraft was able to land without any issue around 4 PM on Runway 27.
The plane successfully taxied on its own to the terminal after which all passengers exited safely. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai was put on emergency alert before the flight’s arrival.
The incident was confirmed by a SpiceJet representative. A wheel from SpiceJet Q400 aircraft which was operating the Kandla–Mumbai route was found on the runway after take-off stated the representative.
The aircraft touched down without incident at 3:51 PM on Runway 27 and no damage was reported.
A former official from the DGCA stated that such an incident is rare but very dangerous. The wheel assembly had two wheels and the second one stayed intact, which prevented a more serious outcome. However, he noted the risk that the remaining wheel could also have failed.
An ex-airline executive suggested that the decision to proceed to Mumbai was strategic. According to him in such situations, a longer and better-equipped runway like the one in Mumbai is the safer choice.
In a public statement, a Mumbai airport official confirmed that the emergency measures such as a full emergency were declared when the flight from Kandla reported technical difficulties. After the aircraft landed safely, the alert was withdrawn.
