Sunny Deol reprised his role as Tara Singh, returning after 22 years, in the movie “Gadar 2.” This character is known for being a truck driver who married a Pakistani woman to protect her during the tumultuous India-Pakistan partition in 1947. The film’s opening earnings in India were just under $5 million, reaffirming Deol’s popularity as a star at the box office.

This movie serves as the sequel to Anil Sharma’s 2001 blockbuster action romance “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.” The movie stars Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, reprising their iconic roles as Tara Singh and Sakina. Like its predecessor, the sequel is directed by Anil Sharma and features his son Utkarsh Sharma as well.

“Gadar 2″ has surpassed the significant ₹400 crore milestone in the domestic box office, making it the sole entrant into the ₹400 crore club. It ranks behind just two films belonging to the ₹500 crore league: Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” and SS Rajamouli’s “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.”

Film industry analyst Taran Adarsh published a list of Gadar 2’s daily domestic box office successes. The movie made $100 million in just three days, then $200 million in the next two days, and $300 million in the next eight. Most recently, it did so in a matter of 12 days, or less than two weeks, when it crossed the 400 crore barrier.

The analyst predicts that Gadar 2 can possibly challenge the domestic box office earnings of both “Pathaan” and “Baahubali 2.” While “Pathaan” leads with the highest domestic gross of ₹543.05 crore, “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” has a cumulative domestic collection of ₹510.99 crore, according to figures from Bollywood Hungama.

Considering Gadar 2’s current trajectory, it’s likely to cross the ₹500 crore milestone by the end of this week. The only competition it might face this week is the Ayushmann Khurana starrer “Dream Girl 2,” which hits theaters on August 25. The upcoming week will give us the results of whether Gadar 2 can maintain its appeal and pose a challenge to “Pathaan”. However, its impressive run might be disrupted by the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s film, Atlee’s action thriller “Jawan,” which is set to premiere on September 7, coinciding with Janmashtami. Until then, Gadar 2 still has two weekends and the Raksha Bandhan mid-week holiday to make a substantial impact.
