Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev, 6-3, 7-6 (4), on Sunday through a deciding tiebreak, with a smashing winner, in San Francisco. Fritz’s victory led to Team World’s third Laver Cup title win, with a total tally of 15-9. Fritz managed the feat after beating World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, the previous night.

The world No. 5 broke the first service game by Zverev and went on to earn over seventy percent of his first serve points. With his aggressive groundstrokes, Fritz continued to dominate the match until the end of the second set when he was broken at 4-3. Zverev regained his strength, leading into a tie-breaker, which ultimately went to Fritz.

The German’s loss helped gain Team Europe’s first championship point. Their third triumph in four years, Fritz credited the win to Andre Agassi’s encouragement and the team synergy, which helped him land the match point volley.

“Seeing these guys on the bench getting pumped up, seeing a legend of the sport like Andre jumping out of his seat cheering for me, it’s just impossible not to give everything you have in every point,” stated Fritz. Team World was trailing on Day 1; however, they won all their matches on the second day.

Aussie Alex de Minaur’s wins against Jakub Mensik and Zverev on Saturday also solidified the team’s success. The World No. 8 earned a total of 12 points—the highest amongst the Agassi-led squad—to add to their tally. Alcaraz bounced back on Sunday with two match wins; however, it fell short in winning the trophy for the Europeans.

Ultimately, Fritz became the pivotal player, whose stellar performance over the weekend decided Team World’s win. He also became the first American to land a Laver Cup win in the states itself. Team World reclaimed the trophy after ceding it to the Europeans in Berlin last year. The 2026 edition of the tournament, founded by 20-time Grand Slam champion and Swiss legend Roger Federer, will be held in London.
