A tragic accident occurred in Mumbai on Tuesday evening when a local train struck a group of individuals. The victims were walking along the tracks close to Sandhurst Road station. The incident took place at approximately 7 p.m., coinciding with peak rush hour, resulting in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries.
Officials said that many passengers had stepped off a halted train after services were disrupted by a sudden strike by railway employees. As services resumed, a fast train heading towards Ambarnath passed through the same section and struck the group on the tracks. Police confirmed that two people died on the spot, while others were rushed to J J Hospital, where one more person later died during treatment.
The strike by Central Railway workers had brought operations to a standstill for nearly an hour. The protest reportedly began after a dispute over an earlier case involving railway staff. With trains stalled and platforms overcrowded, several commuters tried to reach nearby stations on foot.
Witnesses said there was confusion and no clear communication from any railway authorities. Some passengers assumed trains would remain suspended and began walking along the tracks towards the next station. Within minutes the fast train approached, giving them little time to move aside.
Police and emergency services soon arrived at the site and moved the injured people to hospitals. An investigation is now happening to determine how the passengers were allowed on the tracks and whether the safety measures were ignored.
Railway officials expressed regret over the deaths and said steps would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The accident has once again raised questions about passenger safety, crowd management, and the need for better coordination between railway authorities and commuters during service disruptions.
