According to a Toyota spokesperson, operations at Toyota Motor Corp’s (7203.T) 12 vehicle assembly plants in Japan have come to a standstill due to a system malfunction. Reuters reported that this suspension of operations resulted from the inability to order necessary components due to the malfunction of the production system.
While the spokesperson emphasised that the malfunction was “likely not due to a cyberattack,” the company is actively investigating the cause. According to livemint.com, the company’s operations were shut down for a day in 2022 as a result of a cyberattack on one of its suppliers, which cost Toyota the production of almost 13,000 vehicles.
The world’s largest automaker, Toyota, has faced disruption in its production processes, yet the extent of the impact on output remains uncertain. The spokesperson confirmed that all domestic assembly plants, with the exception of the Miyata plant in Fukuoka and Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu’s plant in Kyoto, have been affected.
While it is unclear if production can be resumed for the afternoon shift on the same day, Toyota’s previous experience with a cyberattack that affected one of its suppliers has heightened vigilance about potential disruptions.
Shares of Toyota exhibited a decline of 0.3% in early Tokyo trade, trading at 2,429 yen. The company’s immediate focus remains on addressing the system failure and restoring normal production operations swiftly.
