In a devastating incident, an under-construction railway bridge near Aizawl, Mizoram, collapsed on Wednesday, claiming the lives of at least 17 workers. The catastrophe unfolded in Sairang, a region in the Aizawl district. Rescue operations are underway as fears mount over more workers being trapped beneath the debris.

Leaders Extend Condolences

The news of the bridge collapse has drawn condolences from prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. 

In expressing his grief, Prime Minister Modi said, “Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Search and rescue activities are underway, and those impacted receive all available aid. He said that the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund would make a gratuity payment of Rs 2 lakh to each deceased person’s next of kin and Rs 50,000 to each injured person.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga conveyed his profound sadness and extended his condolences to the grieving families. He also acknowledged and thanked the individuals who came forward in large numbers to aid in the ongoing rescue operations.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed astonishment and instructed her chief secretary to coordinate with the Mizoram administration immediately for rescue and assistance operations, especially for those hailing from her state, Malda district.

The tragic incident serves as a sad reminder of the critical importance of stringent safety measures at construction sites and the need for swift and efficient response efforts during such tragic events.
