Legal action was recently prompted by allegations that a female singer disrespected the national flag while performing at a bar in Koregaon Park. Official charges against the singer concerning the incident have been filed by Pune police.

A video on Twitter went viral showcasing singer Uma Shanti dancing with the Indian tricolor and throwing it to the audience. Netizens demanded justice and appealed to Home Minister Amit Shah to look into the matter. The recording prompted charges against the singer. She was also seen dancing and carrying the flag of her country during her performance.

Singer Uma Shanti, alias Jiapiha Larina, and Aundh resident Karthik More are crucial figures in the case. Around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, the event happened at the Freq Super Club Bar Kitchen in the Koregaon Park neighborhood.

Police Constable Tanaji Deshmukh filed a formal complaint at the Mundhwa police station. The Police said that Karthik More planned an event at the Freq-SSuper Club Bar Kitchen prior to Independence Day that featured a performance by Uma Shanti, lead singer of the band Shanti People.

The entire incident was recorded on camera, which was then shared, and prompted the police to file a report. Sandeep Jore, an assistant police inspector, is looking into the matter more.

According to the police, the accused have been charged with offenses under sections 110 (Behaving indecently in public) and 117 (Penalties for offenders under Sections 99 to 116)  of the Maharashtra Police Act, as well as section 2 (any disrespect towards the Indian flag will be punishable) of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. No one has been detained yet.
