A seventeen-year-old boy was seen recklessly driving a four-wheeler in Kharadi village, Pune, at night. He was booked for underage driving and using a forged license plate. According to bystanders, he was observed flouting traffic rules and driving without due care on a busy street, causing inconvenience and panic among pedestrians and sparking more serious conversations about negligence, road safety and the growing concern over minors getting easy access to vehicles without adequate supervision.

Upon flagging down the vehicle, the authorities found that the original license plate had been replaced with a fabricated one, with the sequence of characters altered a bit, most likely intended to mislead the police and thus evade identification. Further investigation allowed the police to determine that the vehicle was registered under the father’s name, and that he had permitted the boy to drive without any concern over his safety or that of others.

The police have confiscated the vehicle for additional investigation and have charged the perpetrator under sections of the law relating to rash and negligent driving, endangering human life, using a false registration number, and permitting an unauthorized person to drive. During the follow-up inquiry, it was discovered that the boy did not even hold a legitimate license, which further added to the gravity of the situation as well as the conversation around irresponsible driving and lack of parental supervision related to road safety measures.

The case highlights broader issues in traffic and law enforcement regarding underage driving and henceforth, the accidents caused by it have been growing recently. According to experts, this incident not only shines a light on the seriousness of violating primary safety norms but also stresses the importance of stricter enforcement and community involvement to prevent such wrong and dangerous misconduct. In Pune alone, the Police have apprehended 25 underage drivers, with fines totalling up to 1.25 lakhs in the first two months of 2025.

Underage driving has become a serious issue that needs swift measures. As the situation continues, stricter laws need to be implemented to deter similar such accidents in the future.
