The Barbie movie crossed the $1 billion mark in foreign revenue on Sunday, making the Mattel doll’s big screen debut the second-biggest release of the year just over two weeks after its much-anticipated premiere.
Greta Gerwig, the director of ‘Little Women,’ has directed Barbie, a 2023 film about the legendary Mattel doll. Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, and many others star in the picture. Following an existential crisis, the film follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) on a voyage of self-discovery.
The Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-led picture about the world’s most famous doll became the second film this year to break the billion-dollar mark globally in its third week of release. After four weeks, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ became the year’s highest-grossing film (so far).
Barbie brings Gerwig to the billion-dollar club as the 29th director and the first solo female filmmaker
According to Warner Bros. Pictures, the fantasy-comedy has earned $459 million in domestic theaters (the United States and Canada) and $572.1 million worldwide, bringing the total to $1.0315 billion. According to Comscore figures, the film grossed $127 million globally this weekend (Friday through Sunday), with $53 million in domestic receipts and another $74 million internationally.
Barbie’s triumph is a watershed moment for women in Hollywood. Gerwig is only the fifth woman to have directed a film with a global gross of more than $1 billion. She is also the first female director of a live-action comedy.
By far the biggest box-office hit of Ms. Gerwig’s career, “Barbie” cemented her standing as one of Hollywood’s young “name” filmmakers — directors who mainstream ticket purchasers recognise as producing unique work. (Another is Jordan Peele.) Ms. Gerwig previously directed “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019). She has been nominated for three Academy Awards.
