The Union Cabinet has approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad marking a significant step towards hosting another International athletic event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the decision which permits the government to sign the Host Collaboration Agreement, submit a formal bid dossier and provide financial guarantees to Gujarat in the event that it is successful.

“The ideal host”/ city, Ahmedabad, has world-class sports infrastructure and is curating a good reputation as a hub for international events. The sprawling Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world located in the same city, which hosted the 2023 ICC World Cup final, and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, a 236-acre facility equipped with an aquatics centre, indoor arenas, and an athletes’ village are a testament to it. Officials believe these facilities give India a strong edge in the international bidding process.

The government views the 2030 games not just as a sporting event but as part of a larger strategy to position India as a global sports powerhouse. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the approval reflects India’s ambition to host world-class competitions and inspire a new generation of athletes. He added by saying that the Games would bring economic opportunities through tourism, jobs and investments in sectors like event management, broadcasting, logistics, and sports science.

Ahmedabad will become only the second Indian city after Delhi to host the Commonwealth Games if succeed. Delhi Games, however, had both sporting successes and controversies. Ahmedabad’s modern facilities and stronger systems will present a different image to the world as told by the officials.

The final selection of the host city is anticipated at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow this November and India must submit its complete bid by August 31 2025. If chosen, India’s larger goal of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games may be facilitated by the 2030 Games.
