The 22 year old Odia became a hope for Indian Athletics as he clocked an impressive 20.37 seconds in the Men’s Relay Finals and also breaching the qualification mark for next year’s global showcase in Tokyo.

The packed Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium shook in awe of the new age athlete as he edged out seasoned competitors and players while setting a new championship record as he crossed the finish line marking the first time any athlete from Odisha has directly qualified for a 200 Meter event at the World Championships.

“This is a dream I’ve chased since childhood,”  Kujur said after his victory, as he donned the tricolour over his chest. “Qualifying for the World Championships means I can now stand on the same track as the fastest men in the world. Today is just the beginning.”

His timing was not only a personal best but the fastest by an Indian in any event this season marking not only a moment of individual glory but national pride as well as it marked a growing depth in India’s sprinting program. His success has been attributed by coaches and fellow athletes to his dedicated training in Bhubaneshwar and recent exposure to European Trips.

“Animesh has worked tirelessly over the past two years,” said Radhakrishnan Nair, The chief national coach,. “His ability to deliver under pressure shows the maturity of a world-class athlete. This gold medal is significant for Indian athletics, as it proves we can consistently produce international-level sprinters.”

Kujur rose from a very modest background in Sundargarh District where after drawing attention in the junior circuit, he made his way to the senior races in 2022. It is his level of perseverance that is inspiring to a number of Athletes as they view his qualification in contrast to limited facilities and equipment.

Many sports analysts believe that this could be the end to India’s Medal Drought as this qualification could help us as Indians fight back against the domination of Caribbean and American athletes in races and the world of sports. “While a podium at the World Championships will be tough, simply having representation in the 200m is a landmark. It will motivate the next generation of Indian sprinters,” noted athletics commentator Neha Varma.

Animesh Kujur’s historic qualification serves to build momentum as India gears up for The Tokyo Olympics next year in 2026 with his golden run opening up new possibilities. After etching his name in the national history, it is now time for him to shine at the international level as he claims – he is not done but is just getting started in the World of Athletics.
