Pune: India’s ‘Golden boy of Athletics’ and two-time Olympic gold medallist, Neeraj Chopra, is all set to bring the curtains down on his 2025 Diamond League, with a shot at the trophy in the Diamond League Final at Zurich’s Letzigrund Stadium, Switzerland.
He has already secured his place in the final after a consistent season, and now Chopra aims to combine victory with another 90m-plus throw, a milestone he achieved for the first time earlier this year.
After creating history in May 2025 at the Doha Diamond League, where he break through the prestigious 90m barrier with a throw of 90.23m which was a career-defining moment for the 27-year-old, and he said that he himself was not satisfied and want to do much better under the guidance of the legendary coach under Jan Železný, he has been focusing on ironing out those technical flaws with the aim of doing much better throw in Zurich.
“Winning the Diamond League is always special, but what matters more is performing at my best,” Chopra was quoted as saying ahead of the meet. “I want to throw beyond 90m again, this time with perfect execution.”
Back in 2022, he earned his first Diamond League title at the Zurich venue, making him the first Indian athlete to achieve this. Three years later, he is again back with the aim to win the trophy.
Chopra this year will compete against a strong group of international rivals. This includes Czech thrower Jakub Vadlejch, who has performed well this season, and Germany’s Julian Weber, a consistent contender. Most finalists are throwing in the 85m to 89m range, so Chopra’s ability to exceed 90m could be challenging.
Chopra’s inclusion in the Diamond League Final is an indication about how Indian athletics is taking a step forward worldwide. His steady performance in key events, like success in Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and retaining the trophy in Paris Olympics in 2024, is what gained him his fame. Fans in each nook and corner in India would watch attentively.
