A revived sense of optimism is helping shape the trade relationship between India and the United States. The nations await to exchange delegations aimed at finalizing a long awaited trade deal. With Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump personally leading the talks to settle unresolved concerns, this good momentum originates at the highest levels.
The renewed push in the relationship was sparked by a recent exchange on social media between the two leaders.
On Trump’s portrayal of optimism about striking a “very big deal,” Modi responded showing equal confidence, saying the talks would “pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential” of their partnership.
A clear political will to overcome trade barriers and move beyond recent disagreements is visible through this high-level interaction. The discussions that were previously stalled are to be resumed with the arrival of a prominent Indian delegation, led by the chief trade negotiator Rajesh Aggarwal, who is preparing to travel to Washington D.C.
Although the exact dates are yet to be confirmed, intense discussions are underway between New Delhi and Washington to keep the trade negotiations moving forward. It’s evident that the top leaders of both countries are personally involved, guiding their teams to finalize this highly anticipated trade agreement. President Trump has mentioned he plans to speak with Prime Minister Modi in the coming weeks, and their direct engagement is a positive sign ahead of the upcoming Quad Summit.
While the primary focus is on trade, there is advancement of broader bilateral relationships.
The two nations are making headway on their defence cooperation along with the trade negotiations. Recently, a US group travelled to India to talk about P81 anti-submarine warfare aircraft prices. Additionally, talks are proceeding to acquire GE-404 aircraft engines for India’s domestic Tejas fighter plane.
President Trump’s recent remarks suggests that the recent talks from Washington criticizing India holds little weight, as he personally commits to steering the negotiations back on track and restoring the strong partnership between these two allies. Similarly, there is instruction from PM Modi for his team to push forward firmly on finalizing the trade deal. As both leaders show their determination, they are cutting through the bureaucratic hurdles and paving the way for more “win-win” trade deals for both economies.
