India has submitted a bid to host the 2030 Common wealth Games in Ahmedabad, hoping it will bolster its credentials to stage the 2036 Olympic Games. The Indian Olympic Association said that it will strengthen its credibility to stage the 2036 Olympic games.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s Union Cabinet authorized the formal proposal to host the 2030 Common wealth Games in Ahmedabad on August 27, 2025. This includes permission to pledge grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government and sign the Host Collaboration Agreement, subject to bid acceptance.

The government formally approved the plan the next day, August 28, reiterating Ahmedabad’s status as the “ideal” host city due to its top-notch facilities, including the enormous Narendra Modi Stadium. An IOA delegation submitted the bid proposal at the Common wealth Sport headquarters in London on Friday.

IOA Executive Council Member Harpal Singh said that this is their commitment to the Common wealth family to deliver games that are athlete-centered, inclusive, sustainable and future facing. It’s their responsibility to execute the event in the best possible way. It is also very much important to ensure that their vision is to use this milestone, not only to honour the past but to set the stage for the future.

The Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) and the necessary assurances from the relevant ministries were approved by the Indian federal government, which last hosted the Common wealth Games in 2010. Singh, who is also a member of the Sports Committee of Common wealth Sport expressed his thoughts saying “proud moment”. This initiative also took India closer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of bringing the Olympic Games 2036 to India.

Harpal Singh also added “Successfully hosting the Common wealth Games will demonstrate our nation’s capability, strengthen our international credibility and lay the foundation for the Olympic journey ahead.”

The 2030 Games host city will be revealed during the Common wealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow in November, with Canada and Nigeria also in the running.
