On Friday, a two-state resolution was proposed in the UN General Assembly. The New York declaration
calls for a peaceful settlement of the Palestine issue. This declaration was named as Endorsement of the
NewYork Declaration on the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and the implementation of
the two-state solution. To decide on this decision, voting was done in the UNGA. It is known to us that
India voted in favour of this declaration, supporting an intervention on the ongoing serious issue and an
urgency to call for peace.
Introduced by France, the resolution was shaped by a high-level conference held in July, which was co
chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. The declaration emerging from the meeting highlights the urgent
need for collective global efforts to bring an end to the ongoing war in Gaza. It also reiterates the
importance of achieving a fair, peaceful, and lasting resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian
conflicts.
A strong re-affirmation was given in the declaration about the global commitment to the two-state
solution, which envisions independent and secure states for both Israelis and Palestinians, coexisting
peacefully. It calls on world leaders and the international community to work together to make this vision
a reality, not only to address the immediate humanitarian crisis in Gaza but also to build a more stable and
hopeful future for everyone in the region.
This declaration received a strong backing, passing with 142 votes in support, 10 against and 12
abstentions. Countries voting against the resolution included Israel, United States, Argentina, Hungary,
etc while a dozen of them chose to abstain. India’s support signals its continued backing for diplomatic
and peaceful approaches to complex international disputes, especially those involving long-standing
territorial and humanitarian concerns. This resolution is seen as a significant step by the international
community towards reviving the stalled peace and addressing the ongoing crisis in this region.
