At least seven people were killed after a private jet attempting an emergency landing crashed into the rooftop of a building in Mexico, sparking a massive fire and causing panic across the surrounding neighbourhood, authorities said Tuesday.
Preliminary accounts stated the aircraft ran into technical problems as it was in transit, and the pilot performed an emergency landing sequence. However, just before a safe landing zone was established, it reportedly lost altitude and went astray when it struck the roof of the multi-storey structure in a densely populated area. And the impact exploded — in flames and thick black smoke.
Witnesses reported screams of confusion as others fled neighbouring buildings, terrified of further explosions or a structural collapse. Several drivers’ cars parked near the site were also destroyed by falling debris and fire. Emergency rescue teams—firefighters, police, and medics—were dispatched immediately. Firefighters labored for hours to try and put the blaze out, and rescue teams searched the wreckage for survivors.
The investigators later reported that all seven passengers were on board the aircraft. There were no reported casualties among residents of the building or nearby structures. As a first line of defence, nearby homes and offices were ordered to evacuate, local officials said, citing safety issues about the spread of fire and the potential degradation of the structure of the building. The local power and gas supply to the area was temporarily shut down to avoid future incidents.
Aviation officials have now entered into an extensive investigation regarding the crash. Authorities said they are examining documents related to the aeroplane’s maintenance record, flight detail and communication logs in order to look for clues about the cause of this emergency. Failure of the mechanical aspects, weather effects and the effects of human error are just three possibilities. Structural engineers have since arrived to assess damage in the affected building.
The site will be held under restricted access until safety inspections are conducted, authorities said. This incident has raised concerns about flight safety during emergency landings and highlighted issues in cities. Officials said additional updates would be shared as the investigation unfolds.
