The Comparative Pune Road Safety Report released by the Pune City Police showed a drastic decline in fatal accidents but high risk to pedestrians in 2025 as compared to 2024.

The report, created in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, compared key statistics on road accidents, deaths, and high-risk areas in Pune over recent years. Notably, the number of fatalities dropped from 341 in 2014 to 290 in 2025, showing a 15% decrease. Most road crash victims were males aged 20 to 49. However, the 2025 data reveals a 19% increase compared to 2021. There has been a 60% rise in these injuries since 2021.

The police report consequently identified 20 high risk ‘Black Spots’ including the Pune-Solapur highway, Pune-Satara road and Pune-Ahmednaga road, constituting 55 percent of fatal accidents last year. These high-risk zones were classified on the basis of the high number of fatalities per kilometre and whether the roads resulted in five serious road crashes or ten fatalities in the last 3 years.

Additionally, pedestrians and two-wheelers were susceptible to an alarming 90% of the total fatalities. Elderly women comprised most of the victims. These collisions mostly occurred with heavy lode vehicles such as trucks, tempos or tankers, according to the report. It also showcased a large number of hit-and-run cases. Infrastructure for pedestrians and awareness campaigns are imperative to curb such accidents.

The report made recommendations for ways to improve road safety, conditions, and laws in order to lower the number of fatalities and serious injuries brought on by traffic accidents. Better sidewalks and crossings, an emphasis on public transportation, the establishment of a crash investigation team, and the enforcement of speed limit and helmet laws were among the primary provisions.
