Abu Dhabi has sanctioned its first autonomous delivery vehicle, a significant move towards the emirate’s strategy for smart mobility and green logistics. The first licence plate for an autonomous delivery vehicle was issued on Monday by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, which was designed by Autogo, a unit of Abu Dhabi-based K2. The vehicle will be used in collaboration with EMX, the logistics division of Emirates Post, 7X.
Equipped with cutting-edge artificial intelligence and intelligent mobility solutions, the autonomous vehicle has the capability to move along city roads autonomously and make deliveries on its own without any human involvement. The Abu Dhabi Media Office states that the project is a state-of-the-art solution for autonomous logistics that provides efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
The pilot run will be introduced in Masdar City, then gradually expand throughout Abu Dhabi. Authorities aim to ramp up the service along with new partners, expanding to more areas all around and ultimately implement it into the city’s transportation system.
This initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s long-term sustainability vision, which focuses on making 25 percent of all trips smart and sustainable and this update is expected to commence by 2040. It follows earlier trials of autonomous taxis in the capital, strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in adopting future mobility solutions.
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, the Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, stressed that the project is not merely a technical experiment but a crucial component of the emirate’s smart logistics strategy as a whole. He emphasized this initiative is a step in the right direction for the ease and convenience of the people. “Autonomous delivery vehicles integrated into the system will further drive sustainability objectives, eliminate traffic and emissions, and improve urban customer experience,” he said.
Tariq Al Wahedi, Group CEO of 7X, further explained that the firm is working towards a model of logistics faster, safer, and more flexible, consistent with the UAE’s digital transformation and green economy strategy.
