53-year-old Rama Kapdi lost her life after her two-wheeler came under the rear wheels of a container truck. The accident occurred on Monday morning near the ISKON Chowk on the unfinished Katraj-Kondhwa road.
Kapde was severely injured and had lost excessive blood. She was rushed immediately to Bharati Hospital by the locals but succumbed to her injuries.
The deceased lived in Gokul Nagar. She was a faculty member of the JSPM Institute and was on her way to the institute early Monday morning when she fell victim to the accident. Kapde had lost her husband 15 years ago and lived with her mother. She is survived by her daughter, Revati, who logged a First Information Report (FIR).
Although the truck driver has been taken into custody, the police confirmed that his medical tests did not show any sign of inebriation. Eyewitnesses say that the traffic was diverted to make arrangements for the arrival of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was scheduled to arrive later that day to unveil the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
This, in turn, caused traffic mismanagement and a faulty road layout, which allegedly led Rama to enter the wrong lane. Locals also claim that due to the highly congested road, emergency medical help could not be provided to the victim.
Following the accident, Prashant Jagtap, NCP city head, commented in his post on X on how the Chief Minister had come to power in order to end the VIP culture. But now, due to VIP arrangements made for him, people are losing their lives.
Furthermore, a case has been registered by the police and an investigation is underway in order to ascertain the real cause of death and confirm whether traffic mismanagement has any role to play in the accident.
