The film “Laapataa Ladies,” directed by Kiran Rao, debuted in theaters on March 1, 2024. Key characters in the film are played by Ravi Kishan, Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastav, and Pratibha Ratna. Under the Jio Studios label, Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande are producing the film. Industry tracker Sacnilk reports that on its sixth day, the film made Rs 50 lakh.

The humorous comedy tells the tale of two brides, Phool and Pushpa, who unintentionally switch places on a train and are situated in the fictional state of Nirmal Pradesh. The groom takes one of them home, leaving the other one stuck at a train station.

After  the film had its international premiere as Lost Ladies at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8, it was shown in theaters all over India on 1st March.

“Watching Kiran Rao’s comeback is fantastic,” remarks Tushar Joshi on India Today. You’re going to be in for a treat if you put your all into this story of two women who vanished. It’s about time Kiran Rao produced more films for general release.”

Not all that glitters is gold though. While receiving critical acclaim and an impressive rating of 8.4 from IMDB the film is struggling a bit to stay afloat in the box office. It did have a strong weekend and Tuesday, but the movie will have to start picking up the slack to stay on screens.

While in contemporary times, a film’s success isn’t entirely based on its theater figures due to the back up of OTT, it is still an important factor. Following a performance of Rs 75 lakh on the first day of the domestic market on March 1, Laapata Ladies brought in an Indian net of Rs 1.45 crore on Saturday and Rs 1.7 crore on Sunday. On Monday, however, the film only made Rs 50 lakh, a 70.59 percent decrease in daily profits.

While these numbers do paint a somewhat bleak picture, the film bounced back on Tuesday. It has received love internationally as well and might just survive a few more weekends at the box office.
