Eurozone’s second largest economy goes into a political dump with Prime Minister Francois Bayrou losing a confidence vote by 364 to 194. Following the defeat, the minister presented his resignation on Tuesday afternoon i.e 9th September, 2025. With this France has lost its fourth Prime Minister in two years. Although the Bayrou led government will be in charge until President Macron decides on a suitable candidate to replace him.

Bayrou proposed a budget for the next year which revolved around a deficit reduction plan of 44 Billion Euro. It included scrapping two public holidays and also froze a majority of welfare expenses. It was naturally rejected by the members of parliament, even though it was an attempt at reducing the borrowing rate to 4.6% of GDP in the next year and further to 2.8% by 2029. Based on this proposal of the country’s debt reduction, Bayrou raised a confidence motion in the National Assembly, losing which he also lost his position.

The superficial reason for this collapse is the proposal but the core remains Macron’s decision to conduct snap parliamentary election last year, which divided the Parliament into three groups. The left alliance even after winning most seats could not find a majority and the far right National Rally lost the majority even with most votes. Last was Macron’s centrist coalition that even with some lost seats successfully formed the third bloc and thus a minority government with limited abilities came to power.

Now, it is at Marcon’s discretion to nominate the new Prime Minister. He may nominate a candidate from the conservatives, socialist, or from the technocrat. And at the risk of following a strategy that earlier failed to stay afloat, he can nominate someone from his ruling centrist minority with names of Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Finance Minister Eric Lombard being whispered in the air.
